In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, David Tangney, Experience Manager and Safeguard Lead for Cognita Enrich Me, shared practical guidance for families navigating the UAE’s extended winter break. He explained that pupils benefit from a mix of rest and light structure, especially after a fast-paced term. A complete lack of routine can make the return to school more challenging, while simple daily habits help children feel settled and ready to learn again.

David outlined the range of camps on offer this season, from performance-based programmes such as football, tennis and athlete development to slower-paced development camps including multi-activity, Arabic language, values sessions, entrepreneurship and leadership workshops. The longer break has allowed Cognita to introduce new offerings and trial partnership camps that cater to wider interests.

A central part of the discussion focused on how parents can choose the right activities. David encouraged families to avoid assuming that camps must be booked for full weeks. Half days, shorter stretches or a mix of different camps allow children to explore their interests, build confidence and understand what feels right for them. He also noted how attending with a friend can ease nerves and make new experiences more enjoyable.

David provided safeguarding guidance for parents considering camps outside the school environment. He advised checking staff experience, child-to-coach ratios, vetting procedures and first aid provision. He also highlighted the importance of warm handovers, clear schedules and thoughtful introductions to help children who feel anxious on day one.

For David, the winter break works best when children have time to rest, enjoy safe and engaging activities and return to school feeling positive and confident.
