Keeping Children Active, Curious and Confident Over the Summer
With the summer holidays offering a welcome break from the school routine, many parents wonder how to keep children active, engaged and learning throughout the long break. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with David Tangney, Experience Manager, Safeguard Lead, and Camps Manager at Cognita ENRICH ME, about making the most of the summer months.
David highlighted the importance of striking the right balance between rest and staying active, explaining that while children need time to recharge, maintaining regular movement and trying new experiences can help them return to school feeling confident and ready for the new term. He encouraged families to see the holidays as an opportunity to explore different sports and activities, develop new skills and simply enjoy being active together.
The conversation also explored how activities such as swimming can build confidence, improve essential life skills and provide children with a real sense of achievement. David shared why summer can be the ideal time to strengthen existing abilities or discover new interests, whether through sport, creative arts or hands-on experiences.
As a safeguarding expert, David also offered practical advice for parents choosing a summer camp, from checking staff qualifications and supervision ratios to understanding health, safety and wellbeing procedures. He explained what families should look for to ensure children have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience.
From preventing the “summer slide” to building confidence through new challenges, this conversation is full of practical tips for helping children stay active, happy and engaged throughout the holidays. Watch the full interview below.
