From the football pitch to the art studio, extracurricular activities are becoming a powerful extension of classroom learning. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer sat down with Gareth Mordey, General Manager of Cognita EnrichMe, to discuss how ECAs are redefining education in the UAE.

With over 20 years of experience in sports and education leadership, Gareth shared how Cognita’s award-winning EnrichMe programme is helping students discover passions, build resilience, and develop essential life skills beyond academics. He highlighted that today’s ECAs span far beyond sports and performing arts, encompassing coding, robotics, leadership, and creativity, offering over 60 different options across Cognita schools.

Gareth emphasised that ECAs are no longer “extra” but essential to a holistic education, giving every student the opportunity to find their spark, form friendships, and grow in confidence. He also encouraged families to seek balance: quality over quantity, and to remember the importance of rest, reflection, and simply letting “kids be kids.”

Drawing from his background as a former professional footballer, Gareth spoke about nurturing young talent through the right environment, communication, and balance, ensuring students thrive without burnout or pressure.

Looking ahead, he shared excitement for upcoming initiatives, including new Ultimate Camps, a partnership with Newcastle United Foundation, and expanded performing arts and leadership programmes designed to inspire students across the Cognita community and beyond.

For Gareth and the Cognita team, enrichment isn’t just about after-school activities, it’s about empowering every child to explore, connect, and grow with confidence.
